This is included in the CONGU Advice document within Appendix I, providing a full range of examples for all formats including some not included in the Rules of Handicapping.

The main aim of this Appendix is to give those involved in administering handicaps and running competitions in GB&I some examples of the calculations that they may encounter as they implement WHS™. For the most part these calculations will be performed by computer software and players will accept the outcome without the need (or inclination) to understand

the underlying mathematics. Nevertheless, there will be occasions when players question an outcome and will seek answers from Committee members. Also some players may have a genuine interest in a deeper understanding of the underlying calculations. Note that the examples use the Rounded Course Handicap™ approach being used in England, Wales and Ireland. For Scotland the full Course Handicap will be used, but is not shown in the examples.

The Appendix is divided into four main parts:

  1. The Handicap Index®
  2. The Course Handicap and its use in Calculating Score Differential™ for Handicapping Purposes
  3. The Playing Handicap™ and its use in Stroke Allowances for Competition Purposes – Individual Formats of Play
  4. The Playing Handicap and its use in Stroke Allowances for Competition Purposes – Team Formats of Play
