How is a Playing Handicap™ calculated?

Modified on Thu, 7 Aug at 1:10 PM

Please see below an example calculation.
Do note that the result will vary depending on the specific values used for par, Course Rating™ and Slope Rating™ .

Step 1: Calculate Course Handicap (CH)

Using the formula:

CH = HI × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

Assuming:

  • Slope Rating = 117
  • Course Rating = 71.2
  • Par = 70

CH = 13.6 × (117 ÷ 113) + (71.2 − 70)
CH = 13.6 × 1.03539823 + 1.2
CH = 15.281415928

Step 2: Calculate Playing Handicap (PH)

Using the formula:

PH = CH × 0.95

PH = 15.281415928 × 0.95 = 14.51734

Rounded PH = 15

When calculating a Playing Handicap™, the difference in results can be attributed to whether machine precision has been used in the calculation. A competition software uses machine precision which is to the first decimal place that has a value of 0.
